About

The work of Somos Collective points to the future of Latin roots music in Canada. Based in Vancouver BC, the group tastefully blends a soulful Latin flair, inspired by Colombian, Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, with groovy dance beats that make it hard for audiences to sit still. Influenced by Manu Chao, Juanes, Ozzomatli, The Buenavista Social Club and Caetano Veloso, they form their repertoire mostly by original songs that speak of cultural experiences and the many shades of love. Their compositions are simple and direct, yet sophisticated melodically and harmonically.

Somos Collective was born from the musical cooperation between Miguel and William Benavides from Colombia and Cary Aileen Garcia from Cuba, who after playing several jam sessions and concerts together, decided to take their fun to higher steps. They later incorporated Myles Bigelow (K-OS, Maraca) on percussion and Michael Rush on bass, both from Canada.

Somos Collective is determined to always keep progressing, experimenting and changing as long as they feel satisfied and challenged by their music. On a conceptual level, the Collective aims to forge a sound that translates into energetic, vibrant new sonorities, an artful blend of traditional rhythms from several South American and Caribbean countries with elegant, jazz-inflected pop and funk.

Somos Collective is inspired by the old and the new in music. Fusion is the formula, Latin America is the core, and love is the outcome
